Visa points for age are based on how old the primary applicant is at the time they are invited to apply — not when they submit the visa application.

Example 1: If you receive your invitation on your 33rd birthday, you are still get 30 points, even if you lodge the visa applicaton later after your 33rd birthday.

Example 2: If the primary applicant is 32 and the secondary applicant is 34, the points are still calculated based only on the primary applicant’s age. The primary applicant gets 30 points.

English Language Ability

To claim points for English language, you must take the test and achieve the required score within 3 years before you get your visa invitation.If you take the test after you’re invited, the score won’t count for points.

Example: If you’re invited on 1 July 2025, only test results from 1 July 2022 to 1 July 2025 are valid. A test taken on 2 July 2025 is not accepted for points.

Skilled Employment Experience

  • Your work experience doesn’t need to be continuous — gaps are okay
  • You can combine Australian and overseas skilled work to earn points
  • Working at least 20 hours per week
  • The job must be in your nominated skilled occupation or something closely related.
  • Only jobs within the last 10 years before your visa invitation date can be counted.
  • Work done illegally in Australia (without the right visa or permission) doesn’t count.

Educational Qualifications

  • You’ll only get points for your highest qualification — not for multiple degrees or diplomas.

Australian Study Requirement

What qualifies as meeting the requirement?

To meet the Australian study requirement, you must have completed at least one degree, diploma, or trade qualification from an Australian educational institution. The study must be:

  • Registered on CRICOS
  • Completed in a minimum of 2 academic years
  • Delivered in English
  • Undertaken while holding a valid visa

Specialist Education Qualification

What qualifies as a specialist qualification?

The postgraduate degree by research (doctorate or masters) must be awarded from an Australian education institution after at least 2 academic years of study in the following science, technology, engineering, mathematics or specified information and communication technology (ICT) fields:

Credentialed Community Language

What is a credentialed community language?

You can claim 5 points if you hold a valid Credentialed Community Language (CCL) result from the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
The CCL test assesses your ability to communicate in English and a community language (e.g. Mandarin, Hindi, Arabic) at a community level.

Study in Regional Australia

What qualifies as study in regional Australia?

You can claim 5 points if you have met the Australian study requirement and at least one of the qualifications was obtained while living and studying(Distance education is not included) in an area designated as regional Australia or a low population growth metropolitan area.

Partner Skills

What counts as partner skills?

To claim partner points, your partner must be under 45 years old, have competent English, and meet the skill assessment requirement for an eligible occupation.
Single applicants or applicants with a partner who is an Australian citizen/permanent resident may also receive points.

Professional Year in Australia

What is a Professional Year?

You can claim 5 points if you have completed a Professional Year program in Australia in Accounting, ICT, or Engineering, for at least 12 months in the last 4 years before being invited to apply.

Nomination or Sponsorship (Subclass 190 / 491)

What does this mean?

Points are awarded if you are nominated by a State or Territory government (Subclass 190 – 5 points), or sponsored by an eligible relative and invited for a regional visa (Subclass 491 – 15 points).
